Is the battery damaged? | DO NOT USE if you notice signs of significant battery damage: ⮽ Large cracks exposing the battery internals. For batteries that are designed to be sealed, any visible crack is significant ⮽ Signs of electrolyte leakage (e.g. visible fluid or chemical deposits on the outside of the battery, unusual odors, hissing, etc.) ⮽ Bulging or deformed loose, damaged, or missing parts (e.g. connectors, contacts, pins, displays etc.) ⮽ Hot / warmer than ambient temperature ⮽ Signs of heat discoloration ☑ Minor damage like scuffs and scrapes are generally ok |
What’s the date on the battery? | New batteries have a shelf-life. If it is a non-rechargeable battery, or the first time using a rechargeable battery, verify that it is within its shelf-life. Rechargeable batteries typically have a 3 year shelf-life from date of manufacture, and non-rechargeable batteries typically have a 5 year shelf-life from date of manufacture. Verify the shelf-life with your supply personnel. Note: Rechargeable batteries will gradually degrade due to usage, storage conditions, and calendar life. Performance should be monitored during each use and batteries showing signs of degradation should be replaced as needed. |
Is it a multi-battery system? | Mixing different batteries in a single system should not be done. Some common disqualifiers are: ⮽ Different technologies ⮽ Different manufacturers ⮽ Different part numbers ⮽ Different ages See the end item’s Technical Manual and TB 43-0134 for more information. |
Is the battery fresh / charged? | If the battery has a State of Charge Indicator, check to see how much energy is available in the battery. Mission parameters will determine if a battery with less full capacity can be used (e.g. training, short duration, etc.); verify with your unit commander. |
Are the contacts clean? | Dirty or obstructed contacts can affect use. Refer to the end item Technical Manuals to determine if any cleaning methods are authorized. |
What temperature is the battery? | Batteries perform optimally at moderate temperatures. When operating under extreme conditions, pre-conditioning the battery at moderate temperatures can increase performance. Some possible methods include: ☑ Inside climate-controlled tent ☑ Inside climate-controlled vehicle ☑ Inside insulated clothing during extreme cold ☑ Avoid direct sunlight in extreme heat |
Is this the best battery for the mission profile? | Batteries are often available in multiple technologies with different characteristics. The simplified battery label, if present, is a convenient way to compare different batteries. If there are multiple battery options presently available, ensure that the best option is being used. Note that there is often a tradeoff between performance and cost; verify your battery choice with your unit commander. |
